Derek Mitchell is senior adviser to Albright Stonebridge Group and the United States Institute of Peace.

Previously, Mitchell was U.S. ambassador to Myanmar from 2012 to 2016, the first in 22 years. He has also served as U.S. Department of State's first special representative and policy coordinator for Burma and principal deputy assistant secretary of defense, Asian and Pacific security affairs.

From 2001 to 2009, Mitchell was senior fellow and director of the Asia division of the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. From 1997 to 2001, he served as special assistant for Asian and Pacific affairs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Mitchell also served as senior program officer for Asia and the former Soviet Union at the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs.
