Alex Schafran is a lecturer in Geography at the University of Leeds.

A planner by training, he holds an MA in Urban Planning from Hunter College (CUNY) and a Ph.D in City & Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to pursuing an academic career, he worked for a decade as an organizer, advocate, policy analyst, and planner for a variety of social justice organizations in New York and California.

His award-winning writing about planning, cities, and regions has appeared in numerous professional and scholarly journals, and he serves on the editorial boards of City.

He is also currently visiting faculty in the Paris School of International Affairs, Sciences Po and adjoint assistant professor of Planning at the University of Colorado-Denver.
