He was chairman of Hasbro's board from 1989 to 2008 and was also previously president and CEO of the company.

Hassenfeld began his career at Hasbro, which was founded by his grandfather, in 1970. He held positions in marketing and sales for both domestic and international operations and became vice president of international operations in 1972. Hassenfeld also served as vice president of marketing and sales, and executive vice president. He was named president in 1984.

Hassenfeld serves as the chief advisor to the China Toy Association and is on the board of overseers at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a member of the dean's council at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and of the board of directors of the medical school at Brown University. Hassenfeld is a trustee emeritus at Bryant University, as well.
