Held on the third Wednesday of every October, Global Ethics Day—a project of Carnegie Council—provides an opportunity for everyone around the world to explore the crucial role of ethics in their professions and their daily lives.
October 21, 2020 marked the seventh annual Global Ethics Day. Hundreds of activities spanned 30+ countries, with activities on six continents. Participants often held socially distant or virtual events, with submissions from Asia, Africa, Australia, Eurasia, Europe, North America, South America, and the Caribbean.

This year, The Global Ethics Day sub-committee of the Ethics Special Interest Group of the FEMA Higher Education Program announced a video scholarship competition to highlight the ethics of access and equity in emergency management. Carnegie Council staff will help to judge submissions and the winners will be featured on the 2020 video page at GlobalEthicsDay.org.
Additional highlights from this year include:
- A global virtual film festival with Netflix watch parties and accompanying panel discussions co-hosted by CFA Institute and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
- A "Global Ethics Data Party" hosted by The Green Land in The Netherlands.
- Creation of "Ethics Storytelling Workshops" hosted by Sophiatown Community Psychological Services in South Africa.
- An online forum on ethics in artificial intelligence with a guest speaker from the Human Brain Project hosted by IDATHA, Uruguay.
- A virtual panel discussion on "Riot Ethics: Protest, Property, and the Politics of Non-Violence" at the Atkins Center for Ethics at Carlow University, Pennsylvania, United States.
- A webinar series on the "Global Ethics of Affirmative Action" hosted by University of California San Diego’s Changemaker Institute in Partnership with the Institute for Practical Ethics, California, United States.
- In remembrance of the 75th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the installation of a poster exhibition from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and a Zoom session with a Hibakusha (survivor) at the Center for International Ethics, Central Michigan University, Michigan, United States.
