Andrew J. Nathan

Andrew Nathan is Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science at Columbia University and director of graduate studies in the political science department.

Nathan has taught at Columbia University since 1971. He served as director of the East Asian Institute at the School of International and Public Affairs from 1991 to 1995 and as drector of graduate studies in the political science department since 1997.

Prior to his tenure at Columbia, Nathan taught at the University of Michigan (1970-71).

Nathan's books include China’s New Rulers: The Secret Files, The Tiananmen Papers, and Chinese Democracy. His articles have appeared in World Politics, Daedalus, The China Quarterly, Journal of Democracy, Asian Survey, and The New York Review of Books.
