Disinformation, fake news, and propaganda have been used to influence politics and societies for centuries. Fake news is thought to have been a phenomenon in the United States since as far back as the 1600s, according to historian Andie Tucher.

But with the Russian influence in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the rising influence of China on campuses and think tanks, these tactics have warranted more attention. The Asia Dialogues program of Carnegie Council seeks to shed light on why these influence campaigns are being used and what their effects will be on democracies and values worldwide.
