Japan’s Looming Climate Showdown

Japan has pledged to “fundamentally shift” policy on coal-powered electricity, initiate a study on the feasibility of carbon pricing, and phase out gasoline-fueled vehicles by 2035. In this article for Foreign Affairs, former senior fellow Richard Katz argues that these new measures will not only curb emissions but may help inspire other countries in the region to take similar steps.
