This case study focuses on the development policies of successive Brazilian administrations beginning with the Vargas presidency in the mid-1950s and leading up to the administration of President Sarney in the late 1980s.

How did each of these administrations contribute to the destruction of the tropical rain forest region known as Amazonia? Policies are discussed in the context of Brazil's national economic policy and in light of the role played by international development organizations.
