Judith Shapiro

Bio

Judith Shapiro is the director of American University's Global Environmental Politics graduate programs at the School of International Service. She received her Ph.D. in International Relations at American University, her MA in Asian Studies at UC Berkeley, and her BA in Anthropology from Princeton.

Much of Shapiro's early academic and professional work focused on the Cultural Revolution and intellectual life in China. In recent years, she has written on the relationship between political repression and environmental degradation. She is a regular contributor of reviews of books on China to the New York Times, the Washington Post, and scholarly journals. She is working on a project on national identity and the prospects for ecological sustainability in China.
