Alastair Smith is a professor of politics at New York University.

His books include: The Dictator's Handbook: Why Bad Behavior is Almost Always Good Politics (co-authored with Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, 2011); Punishing the Prince(co-authored with Fiona McGillivray, 2008); Election Timing (2004); and The Logic of Political Survival (co-authored with Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, Randolph M. Siverson, and James D. Morrow, 2003).
