The Kurdish Spring: A New Map of the Middle East
With 32 million Kurds in "Kurdistan," which includes parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey, the Kurds are the largest stateless people in the world. And with chemical weapon attacks from Saddam Hussein in 1988 as the most glaring example, they have faced prosecution and repression in each of these states. In recent years, though, the Kurds have evolved from a victimized people into a coherent political community. What is the cause of this transformation? In the face of Islamic extremism, how do the Kurds help to advance U.S. strategic and security interests in the region?
