The Lockerbie Bombing: The Search for Justice

Tuesday, March 21, 2017 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM

Detail from book cover

Description

Kenny MacAskill served as cabinet secretary for justice for the Scottish government from 2007 until 2014. In 2009 he was confronted with an agonizing ethical decision—whether to release from prison Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, who was convicted of the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am flight from London to New York, killing all aboard, and devastating the small Scottish town of Lockerbie, where the plane came down.

In 2009, al-Megrahi was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Under Scottish law, there is a compassionate release provision for such individuals. MacAskill will discuss his decision and the international intrigue that ensued.
