Pax Ethnica: Where and How Diversity Succeeds

In a world replete with news of sectarian strife, is there anywhere left for different ethnicities, and especially Muslim minorities, to live in peace?

Kerala, India; Marseille, France; and Queens, New York are just a few of the places that are notable for minimal violence, rising life expectancy, high literacy, and great diversity. What can we learn from these oases of civility?

Karl E. Meyer served on the editorial board of The New York Times and previously was a foreign correspondent and editorial writer for The Washington Post. He is currently editor emeritus of World Policy Journal.

Shareen Blair Brysac was a prize winning documentary producer for CBS News.

Meyer and Brysac, who are married, have co-authored Kingmakers: the Invention of the Modern Middle East and Tournament of Shadows: The Race for Empire in Central Asia.
