Description

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has declared 2012 the "Year of Prevention." Nearly a year ago the Security Council resolved to intervene militarily in Libya, invoking the principle of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) the civilian population of Libya against its government. Uprisings in the Middle East continue to spark debates about the use of R2P and humanitarian intervention as a foreign policy tool.

In this event, Netherlands Ambassador Herman Schaper will focus on the increasing role of R2P in international relations, and some of the difficult ethical questions that arise as a consequence.

Robin van Puyenbroeck will moderate this event.
