Our Mission: A Global Voice for Ethics

Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) institution serving as a nonpartisan, educational resource for international affairs professionals, journalists, educators and students, business people, and the attentive public worldwide.

Founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1914, the Council is a forum for the world's leading thinkers, experts, and decision-makers. Through videos, audios, and publications, the Council reaches a global audience, and embodies Andrew Carnegie's two great philanthropic interests: educational opportunity and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

Our work is rooted in the premise that the incorporation of ethical concerns into discussions of international affairs will yield more effective policies both in the United States and abroad.

By ethics, we mean standards by which policy choices are made and defended, with attention to these guiding principles: pluralism, fairness, and rights and responsibilities. For more on the Council's approach to ethics, click here.

Using our convening power, our core educational mission is to enlarge the audience for the simple but powerful message that ethics matter, regardless of place, origin, or belief.

Our Work: A Global Resource for Concerned Citizens Everywhere

Carnegie Council produces events and educational materials that help a global audience explore the ethical dimensions of issues from human rights and the just use of force to religious pluralism, environmental sustainability, and corporate social responsibility.

Each year, we convene more than 80 events. Through lectures, workshops, panel discussions, conferences, interviews, our online magazine Policy Innovations, and our peer-reviewed academic journal, Ethics & International Affairs, the Council has earned a reputation as an honest, objective broker in international affairs.

Our programs and publications have attracted an array of speakers, specialists, and opinion makers including Nobel laureates such as Amartya Sen and Joseph Stiglitz; global leaders and government officials such as H.E. Dr. Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland, H.E. Sergey Kislyak, Bernard Kouchner, and Anne-Marie Slaughter; prize-winning journalists like Ian Buruma and Thomas Friedman; and prominent thinkers including Francis Fukuyama, Michael Ignatieff, Joseph S. Nye, Jr., Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, and Michael Walzer.

Our Outreach: A Global Ethics Studio

Our in-house Carnegie Ethics Studio uses the latest digital technologies to serve the enduring values that guide Carnegie Council.

The Studio records and edits most of the Council's lectures and interviews and produces original content, such as the "Global Ethics Corner" series. We distribute these materials free of charge to online, TV, and radio outlets, and we have a prominent presence on YouTube, iTunes, and iTunes University.

Carnegie Council has developed partnerships with leading media outlets, including: C-SPAN; CUNY TV; Forum Network, a public service of PBS and NPR; and MHz Worldview Channel, which reaches 30 million people.

Our Supporters: A Global Partnership for Ethics

Although related to Carnegie organizations through our founder and principal benefactor Andrew Carnegie, we are separate from other Carnegie philanthropies. Half of our program activities are funded through an endowment, with other funds coming from grants, gifts, membership dues, and the generous donations of our supporters.

Carnegie Council gratefully acknowledges the support of: Carnegie Corporation of New York, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, The Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education, The Alfred and Jane Ross Foundation, Rockefeller Family & Associates, Hewlett-Packard, The Dillon Fund, Booz & Company., U.S. Army War College, ClearWorld Energy, Japan External Trade Organization, and the International Labour Organization.
